A police dog unit was on the scent of youths who crashed a stolen car in Auckland early yesterday morning, Auckland Police say.
At around 4.40am on June 30, Auckland City officers observed a Mazda Axela vehicle “acting suspiciously” on Hobson Street, police say.
Auckland Central Police area response manager, senior sergeant Shaun Richardson, says a unit signalled for the vehicle to stop, but the driver fled at high speeds.
“Due to the dangerous nature of the driving, the vehicle was not pursued. Just minutes later, motorway cameras located the vehicle after it collided with a member of the public’s car near the Wellington Street overbridge.”
The two occupants were observed fleeing the scene on foot, says Richardson.
“Thankfully, the driver of the other car was uninjured. Cordons were established, and a police dog unit was tasked with helping locate the pair.
“Delta successfully tracked the suspects to an address on Wellington Street, where two individuals were located and taken into custody. The Mazda Axela was confirmed as stolen,” Richardson says.
A 14-year-old female and a 16-year-old male have been referred to Youth Aid, say police.
