It sounds counterintuitive, but strawberry plants thrive on a bit of winter chill. That cold snap is exactly what triggers an abundance of fruit in summer.
And while you’re out there getting your strawberries in, it’s worth tackling the bigger jobs too. Winter is the best time to plant trees – especially deciduous fruit, shelter, and ornamental varieties – along with hedges and perennials.
Cooler soil gives roots the chance to properly establish before summer heat puts them to the test. “The added bonus,” says Maria, “is you barely have to water anything!”
Winter isn’t just for planting, though; it’s also when Harry and Maria are hard at work planning for spring.
By June, Maria is deep in the seed catalogues, choosing the varieties that will fill the greenhouse in the months ahead.
“My husband jokes I just like looking at pretty flowers,” she says. “But really, we’re choosing the best varieties so we can offer people a wide range of quality plants.”
That planning pays off. Come spring, the greenhouse bursts at the seams with over 150 varieties of summer crops, herbs, and annual flowers, plus their “non-stop veggies” (perfect for planting year-round) like lettuce, brassicas, and leafy greens.
