PIA – 90 years and still growing

It’s been almost a century since the Pukekohe Indian Association (PIA) first set down roots in Franklin – some things never change.

Recently, the association marked 90 years involvement in the community with a commemorative tree-planting day at Ray Fausett Reserve.

“The morning saw a fantastic turnout that bridged generations and local leadership,” PIA president Harsad Bhula says.

“Joining us for the occasion was Alan Cole, from the Franklin Local Board, alongside our members and the future of our association, our youth and young children.

“Working shoulder-to-shoulder, our youngest members helped plant the trees with their hands in the soil, serving as a powerful symbol of the deep roots our founders laid and the continued growth of our community for decades to come.”

The PIA has been closely connected to the local market gardening community since its inception in 1936, helping its members through, and providing shelter during, tough times.

“The PIA has spent the last nine decades growing into a vibrant cornerstone of the Franklin area,” Bhula adds. “Just as our forefathers planted the seeds of this association 90 years ago, we are planting these trees today so that future generations can enjoy their shade.”
