This Labour Weekend, an open studio-oriented event is coming to Franklin, offering attendees a glimpse into artists’ lives.

The goal of the Franklin Arts Trail is to promote the district, connect artists with their admirers, and encourage community participation.

Franklin Arts Trail coordinator Jane Thorne operates under the umbrella of the Franklin Arts Centre in Pukekohe.

In addition to several pieces of art displayed on the trail, Thorne will be showcasing one of her latest works, ‘Keep Calm and Carrion,’ inspired by beetles.

“This one was a message to myself. Normally, I try to be a little bit funny because I like a bit of humour in art. This one was a bit of a pun, because I felt like I was being snowed under with all my responsibilities.

“I had an exhibition that I needed to paint for, so I thought, let’s just get stuck in, and it was like ‘keep calm and carry on’, and I did. And then I found out about carrion beetles, so it was perfect,” said Thorne.

It is their vision that the trail brings both visitors exploring Franklin with its creative communities, and artists with opportunities to showcase their work to a wider public.

The trail will be spread out across Franklin, including Waiuku, Pukekohe, Drury, Ararimu, and Onewhero.

The Franklin Arts Trail will be held from October 25 to 27, running from 10am to 4pm, and is a free event.
