An off-duty officer has helped nab a shoplifter after busting him attempting to leave a supermarket with a trolley full of groceries, say police.
At about 1.15pm on Sunday, the off-duty officer spotted a man allegedly leaving without paying for a full load of items at a supermarket in Lynfield.
Auckland City West Police area response manager, senior sergeant Guy Baldwin, says the officer was also assisted by a member of the public.
“The alleged offender has resisted arrest, which resulted in a struggle.
“During this, the man’s partner has left the scene and come back in a vehicle and made a number of threats towards the officer and member of the public.”
Baldwin says the alleged offender was let go and got into the vehicle which then left the area at speed.
“A police unit located the vehicle shortly afterwards and followed it to Caltex Blockhouse Bay, where both occupants were taken into custody without incident.
“Thankfully no one was injured, and the items were recovered and returned to the store.
“If you see shoplifting, call 111 if it’s happening now, or 105 if it’s after the fact.”
A 27-year-old man charged with assault with intent to injure a first responder, shoplifting, and resisting police, is due to appear in the Auckland District Court today, August 24, police say.
A 26-year-old woman is due to appear in the Auckland District Court on August 28 charged with threatening to kill.
