Auckland has a plan in place in case of drought this summer as well as healthy water stocks, but shorter showers and refraining from watering gardens will still make sure every drop counts.
With total water storage at 94 per cent – almost 10 per cent above the average for this time of year – water restrictions this summer are unlikely, Watercare’s Mark Bourne confirms.
“We monitor Auckland’s dam levels, water demand and the weather to make sure we’re in the best position to manage potential dry periods,” he says.
“Our dams are almost full as we head into what is forecast to be a dry few months.” Locals are using less water at peak times – during the past five years, the annual average use has dropped. “Aucklanders have done a fantastic job adopting simple water-saving habits, and it makes a real difference,” he says.
“Every litre saved helps. By making water efficiency part of our everyday routine, we can all play a part in helping ensure Auckland continues to have a secure and reliable water supply.”
While Auckland’s water demand can rise substantially on hot, dry days, simple measures add up and they can also help keep water bills down, Bourne advises.
“Shorter showers can make a big difference, so try to keep showers to four minutes or less. Water gardens early in the morning or at dusk to reduce evaporation and always use a trigger nozzle to avoid wasting water.
“Checking for leaks is another good way to save water – a leaking toilet can waste up to 80 litres a day.”
Although an El Nino climate pattern is expected to bring with drier than usual conditions during spring and summer, Watercare’s Drought Management Plan will ensure there is time for ‘drought preparedness’ if rain stays away.
“The Drought Management Plan is all about planning ahead,” Bourne says. “It helps us, council and the community work together to keep water use on track and ensure Aucklanders continue to have access to safe, reliable drinking water.”
