A new report shows many Aucklanders are making assumptions about flood risk, potentially putting themselves at great risk.
The Renting and Climate Change in Tamaki Makaurau/Auckland report found that renters often relied on their landlords to inform them of any hazards affecting their homes, but that did not always happen.
Instead, the report found that renters, landlords, and property managers relied on past disaster events to make their decisions rather than on up-to-date information.
The report highlights reliable tools residents can use to help, such as the Flood Viewer, to check whether their homes are at risk of flooding, and the Auckland Climate Action website, which offers clear advice on a range of topics for renters.
Nancy Baines, Auckland Council’s principal flood risk, says the answer is clear and the information is easy to find and digest.
“Aucklanders want to make good decisions about their homes, whether they’re renting, buying, or managing a property. Tools like Flood Viewer help people get a clearer picture of potential flooding risks, and the Auckland Climate Action website makes it easier to plan with confidence.”
The report also shows that, if people prepare for storms and flooding, they do so in simple, short-term ways, such as stocking up on extra food and checking their drainage pipes.
Longer-term preparations, such as flood-proofing, structural strengthening, and tree maintenance, were less likely due to costs, confusion about next steps, and limited guidance.
