Labour says free screens aren’t enough

Earlier this week, the government announced screening for cervical cancer will be free from March next year.

While endorsing the decision, Labour’s health spokesperson Ayesha Verral says it shouldn’t stop there.

“Free cervical screening will help remove a cost barrier and save lives, and we welcome the government finally taking up Labour’s policy,” she says.

Verral says National should consider adopting other Labour policies, including free GP visits, free prescriptions and free maternity scans.

“Making healthcare more affordable ensures problems are caught early, whānau stay healthier, and hospitals are there when they matter most,” she says.

If elected this term, Labour has promised every graduate nurse a job in the public health system, and Verral says National should do the same.

“Labour has a plan to make healthcare more affordable and accessible,” she says. “Simeon Brown has been missing in action as Health Minister, we’re more than happy to take over that responsibility after November 7.”
