Health New Zealand has issued a health warning for Huntly’s Lake Puketirini, effective immediately.
A bacterial health warning for Lake Puketirini was issued on January 6 following reports of people becoming unwell with symptoms of gastroenteritis after using the lake.
“While this health warning is in place, Health New Zealand advises people not to swim, paddle, or take part in any recreational activities involving contact with the lake water.
“Waikato Regional Council are currently undertaking water quality testing. There is no confirmed timeframe yet for when results will be available.”
Ongoing health warnings also remain in place for cyanobacteria at:
- Lake Kainui
- Lake Arapuni
- Lake Rotokauri
- Lake Waikare
- Ngā Roto
Health New Zealand advises avoiding activities that could result in skin contact with affected water or swallowing water, as exposure can cause illnesses including diarrhoea and vomiting, skin and ear infections, and respiratory illness.
If you have already been in contact with the water and feel unwell, please seek medical advice from your GP or contact Healthline on 0800 611 116. Please also report it to the National Public Health Service Waikato office on (07) 838 2569.
If you remain well, no further action is required.
