Atmospheric readings now show that the air quality in and around drains in Tuakau has returned to safe levels, following a callout earlier this evening, Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) has now confirmed.
As reported earlier this evening (July 21), a strong chemical smell sparked alarm leading FENZ to flush an unknown hazardous substance from wastewater.
Residents who were evacuated earlier this evening are able to return home and advice to other residents to stay inside with doors and windows shut has also been lifted.
The scene has now been left in the hands of local water management staff. The nature and source of the substance is still yet to be identified.
