Mother’s Day, on Sunday, May 10, is the perfect excuse to slow things down and start the morning with something thoughtful.
Breakfast for mum doesn’t have to be complicated, it just needs a little care and a dash of effort that says “I made this for you” without actually having to say it out loud.
A classic option is pancakes topped with fresh berries, yoghurt, and a drizzle of maple syrup.
If you think mum would prefer something lighter, try smashed avocado on toast with a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of feta, or even a poached egg on sourdough if you’re feeling slightly more ambitious than toast-and-go.
For a warm, comforting choice, scrambled eggs with smoked salmon or sautéed mushrooms always feels a bit more special than the everyday, especially when served on real plates instead of whatever was closest in the cupboard.
If you want to elevate it just a little further, think about balance and colour on the plate too – a bit of fruit on the side, maybe some roasted tomatoes, or even a small bowl of yoghurt and granola to round things out.
It doesn’t need to look like a café spread, just something that feels considered rather than rushed.
Don’t forget the small touches, a fresh cup of coffee made just how she likes it, her favourite tea brewed properly (not forgotten in the pot), or a glass of juice on the side.
Even a simple breakfast tray with a handwritten note, a flower from the garden, or a slightly questionable homemade card can turn a regular morning into something memorable for mum.
Bonus points if you manage to deliver it without spilling anything on the way.
And if breakfast in bed feels like too much logistical risk, a sunny table outside or a relaxed kitchen sit-down works just as well.
It’s not about perfection, it’s about making mum feel appreciated from the very first bite – ideally before she’s had a chance to ask anyone to tidy up the rest of the house.
