Tucked away behind Great South Road in Drury is a much-loved community hall.
The hall at 10 Tui Street is next to Drury Community Library and Drury Domain, making a nice wee hub for the Drury community.
The Auckland Libraries Heritage Collections state that the hall was first opened in 1884. It was renovated and enlarged in 1959, with the building moving from its original site on Great South Road to the Drury Domain. The existing hall reopened in 1960.
It has one main hall area, with a standing/seated capacity of 150 people and a dining capacity of 120 people. Facilities include a kitchen, stage, tables and chairs, air conditioning, heating, off- street parking, toilets, entrance ramp and access card entry. There is also the Civil Defence room that can be used in an emergency.
Improvement work carried out in recent years includes a general spruce-up of the interior. The roof was repainted last March, and security bars and a new security door for the Civil Defence room were recently installed inside the building.
Drury Hall is booked for a range of religious activities, fitness, sport and recreation, private
events and social celebrations. Three-quarters of bookings come from regular hirers, and
Auckland Council says the hall is very well used – from last July until now, it has had more than 400 bookings.
