Police have revealed that two devices recovered near a man’s body found near Highbrook yesterday, July 22, were viable pipe bombs.
Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Hayward, of Counties Manukau Police’s criminal investigation branch, says police are continuing an investigation into the man’s sudden death.
“The man’s body was discovered on a walkway adjacent to the Southern Motorway before lunchtime.
“Further specialist examination of two devices recovered near the man’s body has now been completed.
“From this examination, police can confirm both devices were in fact viable pipe bombs.
“These devices would have been capable of causing death or serious injury to any individual in proximity.
“Thanks to specialist assistance at the scene, these devices were safely removed and have since been destroyed. There is no wider risk to the public.”
Hayward says a post-mortem examination is being completed today on the man who was located deceased.
Police also expect their scene examination to be completed this afternoon.
“On Tuesday, police staff carefully balanced public safety considerations as well as the integrity of a scene.
“Given the scene’s proximity to a major state highway, it was imperative that the area was made safe before proceeding.”
