A night of dangerous driving across Auckland’s motorway network ended abruptly near Bombay with a car full of fleeing youths in custody.
Just before 8pm on Tuesday, a police motorways unit observed a Toyota Corolla allegedly exceeding the speed limit along State Highway 16 near St Lukes.
Senior sergeant Bronwyn Matthews, of Auckland City East Police, says the vehicle was signalled to stop, but the driver ignored instruction and continued heading southbound.
“Due to the nature of driving, the vehicle was not pursued.”
A quick call to the car’s registered owner established the Corolla had been stolen from Titirangi earlier in the evening of July 21, says Matthews.
“Motorway cameras and Eagle [helicopter] kept observations on the vehicle as it travelled across the motorway network at high speeds.
“Spikes were deployed as the vehicle left State Highway 1 near Bombay.”
The vehicle continued south before coming to a stop on the Waikato Expressway, Matthews says.
The three young occupants were taken into custody without incident. She says the group put everyone on the road at risk.
“This was a dangerous display of driving across Auckland’s motorways, and it’s lucky it did not result in harm to the vehicle’s occupants or innocent members of the public.”
A 15-year-old male was due to appear in the Auckland Youth Court yesterday (July 22) charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and failing to stop.
