The Franklin Local Board has been honoured at the Economic Development New Zealand Awards.
The board was awarded an Honorary Commendation for Collaboration in November, which celebrates “outstanding partnerships between organisations that have worked together to achieve significant economic outcomes.”
It was awarded in recognition of the “Find Your Franklin” project, a collaborative model for their place-led economic development.
The awards ceremony took place at the Wynyard Quarter in Auckland as part of a three-day economics conference, focusing on how local capability can drive national growth and help New Zealand compete more effectively on a global scale.
Speaking on behalf of the board members, Franklin Local Board Chair Alan Cole said they were very proud to have received the award.
“The award reflects our commitment to driving growth and opportunity across the region. We’d like to especially acknowledge former Chair Angela Fulljames and Councillor Andy Baker for their vision and support.”
The Franklin Local Board 2020 economic plan addresses the key objective of supporting economic development in the Franklin area. The council has expanded investment in regional economic development from $160,000 to $600,000.
Since its inception, the plan has helped create a path forward for economic growth, taking advantage of Franklin’s unique geography. It uses a long-term framework that helps foster innovation and attract new businesses to the area.
The innovative approach that the Franklin Local Board has taken has not gone unnoticed, and now neighbouring boards in South Auckland have begun considering their own economic strategies.
