In response to Labour’s climate policy, National says it will only bring on more taxes.
National’s revenue and climate change spokesperson Simon Watts says Labour’s plan to increase the carbon price will increase electricity bills, petrol and food prices as well.
“Labour needs to front on just how high they want the carbon tax to go. Independent analysis shows lifting the ETS by $50 would cost Kiwi households more than $400 extra a year,” he says.
Watts says the policy would add to other taxes proposed by Labour, including a capital gains tax and a tax on businesses.
“National has a sensible plan to reduce emissions while still growing the economy, creating jobs and lift incomes – working with businesses and using new technology to reduce carbon without pulling a massive economic handbrake,” Watts says.
