While numerous Franklin parks have received upgrades recently, with new playgrounds added also, Manukau now boasts a seriously good addition.
Manu-kau Noa Iho Hayman Park features new public facilities, spaces to relax and even a wetland.
The restoration has required years of work, but it’s been worth the wait, Manukau Ward councillor Lotu Fuli says.
“This wonderful project has taken over a decade to go from ideas and drawings in a boardroom to a beautiful, well-used shared space for our community. I am very proud of the transformation that has happened here [including] the playground and now the restoration of the wetlands,” she says.
“The entire park is a space for families, students, workers and our seniors to relax, reconnect with nature, exercise and play.”
The park is part of the wider Transform Manukau programme intended to benefit families, celebrate culture, attract visitors and support one of south Auckland’s busiest centres.
The project is a great example of why local boards matter, Fuli’s fellow ward councillor, Alf Filipaina, adds.
“What I love about this renewal is what the park will mean for the next generation. I want to thank mana whenua for helping keep this work alive. It’s taken many hands, but their vision has helped carry it forward – and who better to tell that story than the kaitiaki (guardian) of this land.”
