As a great man once sang, “It’s a long way to the shop if you want a sausage roll.” At least we think that’s what he meant.
Thankfully, should our local bakeries make the cut in the Bakels Legendary Sausage Roll competition, it won’t be far for us to travel to partake of some of the country’s greatest meaty, pastry creations.
While they may seem simple, a lot of work goes into rolling up right, NZ Bakels’ Brent Kersel contends.
“A well-formed, flavoursome sausage roll is not only a thing of beauty, but it is the answer to so many snack or meal options. We want to work towards producing sausage rolls that will be talked about everywhere.
And, the best way to achieve that is to judge them against their peers,” he says.
“So, bakers, are you up for the challenge? And sausage roll fans, we need you to let your favourite bakery know that their sausage roll is worth entering.”
The winner will be crowned the 2026 Sausage Roll Legend and receive a trophy, certificate and $1500 in prize money. Entries close September 11 with judge’s rulings confirmed on October 2.
As previously covered, the Franklin region had a few bakeries among the finalists in the recent Bakels Pie Awards including Pukekohe’s Target Bakehouse and Cafe, noted as Highly Commended. If they can step up again, it’ll be fair to say they’re on a (sorry, readers!) roll.
