One person has died following a fatal crash in Manurewa. A critical incident investigation is now underway, says Superintendent Shanan Gray, Counties Manukau Police.
“At approximately 9.36pm last night (August 28), police were called to an address on Greenmeadows Avenue following a report of an aggravated robbery. An alleged offender was believed to have stolen a vehicle from the property after presenting a crowbar at the occupant.”
As police approached, they observed a vehicle being driven in the middle of the road without headlights. Enquiries confirmed the vehicle was stolen from Greenmeadows Ave.
“Police signalled for the vehicle to stop, however, it failed to do so and took off at speed. The vehicle travelled onto Alfriston Road, where it collided head on with a vehicle coming in the opposite direction,” Gray says.
“Officers immediately rendered first aid, however the driver and sole occupant of the stolen vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene. The occupant of the second vehicle was taken to hospital with moderate injuries.
A scene examination has been completed by the Serious Crash Unit and the road has since reopened.
“There are several investigations now underway, which will work to establish all the facts surrounding this tragic incident. This includes notifying the Independent Police Conduct Authority, as is standard procedure. We are also working to support those affected and their families, as well as our staff who were involved.”
All involved in the initial report of aggravated robbery are believed to be known to each other, so there is no ongoing risk to the public, Gray adds.
