Winter fare – soup’s you?

Few meals are as comforting on a cold winter’s day as a steaming bowl of hot soup. What’s more, while they warm the body, certain soups can also provide valuable nutrients to help stave off (or fight) colds.

Chicken soup has long been regarded as the go-to remedy when illness strikes and there is some solid science behind this. While it’s not a cure, it can help ease symptoms and provide nourishment when appetites are low.

The combination of chicken, vegetables and broth provides protein, vitamins and minerals that help the body recover and stay strong.

Chicken is also rich in protein, which supports tissue repair and immune function, while vegetables, such as carrots, celery and onions, supply vitamins A and C along with antioxidants. A warm broth also helps maintain hydration.

The steam from hot soup of any variety can help loosen mucus and temporarily relieve nasal congestion, making it easier to breathe.

Other soups offer similar health benefits. Pumpkin soup is packed with beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A to support immune health. Tomato soup provides vitamin C and the antioxidant lycopene, while vegetable soup combines a variety of vitamins, minerals and fibre to help maintain overall wellbeing.

Lentil and bean soups are another excellent choice. Rich in plant protein, fibre, iron and zinc, they help support immune function. Pea and ham soup offers protein along with slow-release carbohydrates.

Mushroom soup, particularly when made with varieties such as shiitake or button mushrooms, contains nutrients including selenium and B vitamins that contribute to normal immune system function.

While chicken soup is an excellent choice, every variety can deliver important nutritional benefits, especially important during winter.
