A 38-year-old man will appear in Manukau District Court today after allegedly using a pole to smash the windows of a Papakura supermarket early this morning, August 10.
Police received reports at about 1.45am of a man carrying a large metal pole on Great South Road. Counties Manukau Police Inspector Matt Hoyes says the man caused significant damage to the storefront.
“Thankfully, staff inside the store were able to retreat to a safe room and no one was injured,” he says.
Police found the man inside the premises, but he allegedly ignored orders to drop the weapon before fleeing on foot.
“A short foot pursuit ensued, with police apprehending him nearby on Great South Road,” Hoyes says.
“Fresh information later connected the man to damage allegedly caused to premises on O’Shannessey Street earlier in the night.”
A 38-year-old man is set to appear in Manukau District Court today, charged with two counts of wilful damage, burglary and resisting police.
