Parking – names of Papakura parks changed

What’s in a name? A park by any other name – at least the plants in it – would smell just as sweet.

Following a hui earlier this year, the Papakura Local Board has renamed 25 local parks with new monikers all intended to highlight and celebrate their unique identity and culture.

It is an honour to adopt the kete (basket) of new names, board chair Kelvin Hieatt says.

“It is a real privilege to enrich the historic value of many more of our public open spaces with these new park names,” he confirms.

“Each name has a significant meaning and narrative associated with its geography and local history, providing an opportunity for residents to learn te reo and about Māori history and values that are locally relevant.”

The new park names are also intended to strengthen council’s relationship with mana whenua while also honouring its commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

“Existing names will co-exist alongside new te reo Māori names as dual titles,” Hieatt adds.

“The exceptions are Hingaia Esplanade Reserve, which has adopted Te Waongaro, and Hingaia Reserve will become Waipaatiki Reserve. Hingaia Park, which is down the road, will retain its name.”

Signs will be replaced when they are due for renewal to minimise environmental impacts and costs.

However, to mark the change, the history behind Te Kirikiri (Keri Downs Park) will be shared through a QR code on updated signage.

Details are available via aucklandcouncil.govt.nz.
