Construction of Papakura’s new courthouse is powering ahead.
Ministry of Justice corporate deputy secretary Kelvin Watson says that construction of the new Papakura District Courthouse is progressing well.
“The project is on track to open in early 2027,” he says. “The internal fit-out is currently taking place.”
As previously reported, Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith said the current Papakura courthouse was a leaky building, which has been fully covered in plastic wrap since 2021 in order to stop moisture getting in.
The Ministry of Justice bought its new 7925sqm section for $11 million. The Elliot Street property used to house the Papakura Returned and Services Association (RSA) until the organisation had to close the clubrooms in 2022.
The current courthouse at 250-260 Great South Road is covered in scaffolding and plastic building wrap to prevent further water damage until the new courthouse is completed.
Watson says the existing courthouse is on leased land, and the building will be demolished before being handed back to the landowner.
In 2025, the Papakura District Court sat on 241 days, averaging 20 sitting days per month. The Registrar’s Court continues to sit once a week.
