The Waiuku Theatre Company is putting on a new production, Twisted Tales. This story takes inspiration from classic fairy tales and turns them on their heads.
While the handsome prince usually saves the day and rescues the princess, in Twisted Tales it’s the princesses that decide it’s their turn to be the heroes and, thanks to a magic slipper and some silly dwarfs, they strike out on their own to try to save their happy endings before it’s too late.
Writer and director Amber Turner says that she wanted to take the stories we all grew up with in a new direction.
“The idea has been one I’ve wanted to explore for a long time, bringing multiple fairy tales together in one story while giving them an unexpected twist,” she says.
“At its heart, the show is about challenging stereotypes and showing that anyone, regardless of who they are, can achieve great things. Princesses can be brave warriors, fairy godmothers can be villains, princes don’t always save the day and sometimes the most unlikely hero can make the biggest difference.
“Almost all of our cast and crew are local to the Waiuku area, with a handful of talented newcomers joining us from the wider Auckland region. Audiences will recognise many familiar faces from previous Waiuku Theatre productions alongside some fantastic new performers we’re thrilled to welcome to the stage.”
