A new production coming to Papakura promises to be a night of intrigue and mystery.
Presented by Papakura Theatre Company, Velvet and Villainy is a cabaret-style musical full of unexpected twists. Surprisingly, even the seating plays a role, replicating a sultry cabaret club.
“We have tiered seating at the theatre, which is what people would usually expect,” production manager and co-director Kristen Cordell explains. “However, cabaret [clubs have] tables and chairs, so we’ve put our tiered seating away.”
Featuring a cast of 17, this James Bond-inspired musical includes several singers and dancers.
But it’s the songs that are the stars of the show with MCs popping up at various times to ensure this performance’s loose storyline stays on track and in sync with the music.
From smoky, intimate melodies to all that jazz, the show creates a world where sophistication meets intrigue and every performance holds a surprise.
Some classics remain untouched while other songs have been reimagined, but each one is expected to keep audiences wondering what’s coming next.
To add to the atmosphere, the show also includes a dress up night (July 25) – audiences are encouraged to dress for the occasion as their favourite spy, villain or femme fatale.
