There’s something deeply satisfying about stepping outside and picking fresh food from your own garden. Whether it’s a handful of salad greens, a bowl of berries, or fruit from your own trees, edible gardening is one of the easiest ways to create healthier meals, save money, and reconnect with the seasons.
The good news is you don’t need a large section or years of experience to get started.
For beginners, the easiest approach is to start small and grow what your family already enjoys eating. A planter of strawberries , a small plot of greens, even a pot of herbs on a windowsill or deck can be rewarding and fun. Growing from seed can be fun and save money.
At Greenrose Garden Centre, we stock a variety of Yates seeds like dwarf peas, baby carrots and rainbow radish as well as a range of ready-to-plant vegetable seedlings, making it simple for new gardeners to enjoy quick results. Mixed punnets are perfect for smaller households wanting variety without waste. If space allows, try staggering plantings a week or two apart to spread harvests over a longer period.
Small-space gardening is becoming increasingly popular for busy households and compact properties. Many edible plants thrive in containers, making them ideal for patios, decks, and smaller gardens. Blueberries, Chilean guava, feijoa, finger lime, pepino, strawberries, and tamarillo are all excellent choices for pots.
Dwarf forms of apples, figs, nectarines, olives, peaches, raspberries, and citrus are also available and are perfect for compact spaces. Make the most of a sunny wall or fence by training a grape, passionfruit or an espalier fruit tree.
For those wanting to create something more permanent, food forest gardening is an exciting and sustainable way to grow food at home. Inspired by natural ecosystems, a food forest combines layers of edible plants — from fruit trees and berries through to herbs and groundcovers — maximising space, sunlight, water and nutrients.
With some planning, it is possible to enjoy something fresh from the garden in every season and avoid having all your fruit ripen at once. A wide selection of berries, citrus, feijoa, and tree tomato is available now at Greenrose Garden Centre, while fresh stocks of deciduous fruit trees — including apples, nashi, nectarines, peaches, pears, and plums — arrive in store from July.
