One year on, the Pukekohe Business Association Good Guys ambassadors have become a
familiar and valued presence around town, known for checking in with businesses, assisting
where they can, and helping create a positive atmosphere throughout the town centre.
From business owners stopping for a quick chat to locals saying hello in the street, the
programme has helped strengthen many connections across the community. The team’s calm and approachable manner has also played an important role in de-escalating situations before they become larger issues, helping reduce pressure on the police and other services. Their regular presence provides reassurance and support for those spending time in the town centre.
While introducing a new initiative into the town centre came with its challenges, the ongoing support from businesses and the wider community has been encouraging. The team has also drawn on learnings from similar programmes in Papakura and Manurewa, adapting successful ideas to suit Pukekohe’s needs.
The team has also heard that Pukekohe is now one of the most active areas for Snap Send Solve reports to the council. This involves logging various issues around town like maintenance and graffiti.
“In the past 12 months alone, we have managed 385 maintenance reports, with 343 already completed,” says Brenda, one of our two Good Guys.
As the programme enters its second year, the focus remains on supporting a safer, more
welcoming and better-connected town centre for businesses, residents and visitors alike.
