Sounds of Tamaki Makaurau a hit in Franklin

An exciting NZ Music Month event was hosted at the Franklin Arts Centre recently as part of an emerging artist showcase, Sounds of Tamaki Makaurau.

Performing in various areas, the up-and-coming artists performed a small set each showcasing their skills and abilities. A wide variety of locals attended many enjoying the relaxed vibe with a coffee.

Most of the artists performed original songs with some stunning vocalists and guitar players. The performers included Jesse and Cyrus Holloway, Amy Mason, Finn Rory, Jahrian Siliva, Tarani Takai and CAZNA.

“Sounds has definitely been a great milestone for me,” Takai says. “Currently, I’m at the University of Auckland doing a songcraft and production course. It’s been really helpful for me to keep learning about the arts and keep creating.”
He begins with the lyrics.

“Then, I’ll add instruments and work around the mood the song is in. Anything thought-provoking, I write down, whether it’s from a book, movie, or a passing comment. I also take inspiration from Billie Eilish – I’ve even been compared to her, which is really cool.”
As for the Holloways, the Franklin Arts Centre is one of their favourite venues.

“The atmosphere was relaxed, so it was easier to perform,” Jesse Holloway says. “There wasn’t so much pressure, everyone was having a good time and enjoying their coffees. It felt natural and we connected with that.

“There should be more opportunities for youth/students who love music to be able to perform. Every region should be given a platform to showcase their local musicians. More venues as well, it could really bring life to music again.”

However, the first step for young musicians is up to them, Jesse adds.

“If you’re in your bedroom [playing or singing], come out! The world wants to hear you, so be confident and follow your heart.”

Other initiatives are also helping young talent on their journey, the programme’s lead Hayley Wolters says.

“I encourage secondary school students to look into our Stand Up Stand Out programme, which paves the way for youth involvement in the music scene here in Tāmaki Makaurau, and offers exciting opportunities to participate in events as part of Sounds of Tāmaki Makaurau over NZ Music Month and much more.”
