As this year’s Anzac Day services proved, Franklin’s young people are ensuring that we won’t forget the legacy of those who gave so much.
Among them was Franklin Times junior journalist, Mercedes Basev who penned this haunting poem.
The Blackbird
- By Mercedes Basev
Mist’s fingers brush his face;
The poppy bows its head
The lamb solemnly stares
At the soldier who is dead.
Overturned earth shivers in the cold
White crosses looking stolidly ahead
The blackbird cries a mournful cry
For the soldier who is dead.
The wind sighs in consolation
And the trees silently dread
The burial of another lost;
A soldier who is dead.
