Winter motoring

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

During winter, there are extra considerations to take on board when on board a motor vehicle, especially when driving on Franklin’s more remote country roads. A little extra preparation and care can ensure we’re not in the dark or left out in the cold.

Before setting out, we should make sure vehicles are in good condition. Check tyre tread and pressure as wet roads reduce traction – coupled with worn tyres and it can be a recipe for disaster.

Make sure brakes, lights and windscreen wipers are functioning properly and keep windscreen washer liquid topped up. A fully charged battery is also important as cold weather can reduce its performance.

Don’t forget the gear and spares! Spare tyres should be up to spec and jacks working correctly as waiting for a tow truck on a freezing evening is not the best option. Carrying jumper cables and other emergency gear can get us out of a jam without needing to wait for help, providing it’s in full working order, of course.

Go above and beyond WOF standard with regards to vehicle condition during winter as, even if your car received this seal of approval six months ago (for example), potentially life-saving parts may no longer be fit for the worst weather.

Particularly as the days become shorter, it’s essential that drivers aren’t worn out too. Even if we leave the office on time, darker evenings can make people feel tired. Stay alert, even if the commute is short, pull over where practical for a rest – no matter the reason, no matter the conditions, driving while fatigued can be fatal. Similarly, if rainfall becomes heavy, pulling over and waiting it out isn’t a bad idea.

Fog, condensation and frost on windows reduce visibility more so during winter. Allow a little extra time in the mornings wipe down condensation and defrost windows and wing mirrors with a little warm water. There’s no harm in carrying a thermos with extra warm water too, just in case.

Leave headlights on – they’re not just about helping you see other vehicles but also so that they will see you.

While ice isn’t often too much of a problem in Franklin, frosty, wet, muddy or flooded roads are. So, increase following distances and allow a little more time to stop while being prepared to brake deliberately (but not sharply) and, if the vehicle slides, to steer into the skid.

Severe weather events, such as Cyclone Vaianu, gain much media attention, but flooding can be regularly problematic on certain stretches of our roads. Take warnings seriously and avoid travelling when advised to stay home.

As even the best preparation can leave us stranded on the roadside, carry an emergency kit. Warm clothes, blankets, drinking water, torches and power banks won’t keep the motor running, but they can ensure we’re warm and comfortable until help can arrive.
