Aka Aka Hall is a joint hub for the community and the nearby school.
Tony Voltz is the booking coordinator for the hall and has been involved with the hall for more than 20 years.
The original Aka Aka Hall was built circa 1912, but was replaced with the current hall in 2002.
The current hall’s construction was a joint venture between the school, Ministry of Education, and the Aka Aka community, he said.
“The original hall was down on the corner of Aka Aka Church Road and Aka Aka Road, about half a kilometre from the school. When it became obvious that the hall was past its use-by date, the community got together with the school’s board of trustees and proposed to build a hall next to the school. A local farmer, Brian Hiscock, donated a parcel of land so the hall could be built.”
The building is made of steel framing with Colorsteel cladding and roofing, with a particle board floor. It features a “good kitchen and supper room” along with a decent-sized stage.
A hub for the school and the rural community, the hall is also used on a regular basis by craft groups, a church group, and each season by the Counties Manukau Cycle Club as the hub for its road races.
“It’s a very popular hall. The school has right of use on school days and for their events, then the community has access on weekends and after school hours.”
