Lives have again been saved during a busy weekend at Kariaotahi.
Shortly before 5pm yesterday (Easter Monday), Hato Hone St John responded to calls for help.
“[We were] notified of a water incident on Karioitahi Road, Lake Puketi, responding with two ambulances, one operation’s manager and one rapid response vehicle. A patient was transported to Middlemore Hospital in a moderate condition.”
Surf Life Saving Kariaotahi was busy over the long weekend.
“Our lifeguards were kept on their toes with an after-hours mass rescue involving five people who were caught in a rip and quickly swept off their feet,” a spokesperson says.
“Thanks to the quick response and teamwork of our Counties Energy Search and Rescue members, all five were successfully rescued and brought safely back to shore. First aid was administered on scene, and one patient was later transported to hospital via ambulance for further care.”
People enjoying the last of the summer weather at our beaches must keep up their guard to help ensure lifeguards are free to attend to the most serious incidents.
Swimmers must:
- Always swim between the flags
- Never swim alone
- Assess conditions before entering the water
- If in doubt, don’t go out!
If people appear to be in trouble in the water, call 111 and ask for police assistance.
