Auckland Council staff are rallying once again to bring Christmas cheer to Aucklanders struggling to make ends meet, launching their annual collection drive for the Auckland City Mission – Te Tāpui Atawhai Auckland Angels appeal.
Donations from council staff will be gathered over the next three weeks at council offices, while Aucklanders across the region are also being encouraged to take part by dropping off long-life food or gifts at any Auckland Council library branch.
Each donation will help create Christmas meal packs for families in need, ensure children receive gifts appropriate to their age and interests, and provide a festive treat for those experiencing homelessness, living in transitional housing or staying at the Mission’s HomeGround facility.
Last year, support from council collections helped the Mission distribute 30,000 gifts to tamariki, while 7000 families were able to enjoy a Christmas meal.
Mayor Wayne Brown said that while Christmas is a joyful time for many, it can be difficult for Aucklanders without strong support networks or those feeling financial pressure.
“Any contribution through this appeal, big or small, is likely to brighten someone’s day,” Brown said.
“I’m more than willing to dig deep for the collection box this year and I encourage everyone who can to do the same. Let’s help to share a little kindness to people who are doing it tough.”
The council has supported the Auckland Angels appeal for six years and continues to work with Auckland City Mission to respond to homelessness across the city.
General Manager of Community Wellbeing Kenneth Aiolupotea said council libraries are proud to play a part in making donating easy and accessible.
“It is great that our libraries are places where our community can make donations to support people in need for Christmas,” he said. “The cool thing about this appeal is that anyone can be an angel, everyone needs an angel and every donation counts.”
Auckland City Missioner, Manutaki Helen Robinson, said the appeal provides meaningful support for many whānau navigating the rising cost of living.
“A big thank you to Auckland Council for supporting the Mission again this Christmas, by making it easy for Aucklanders across the region to donate,” she said.
How to donate
Food or gifts can be dropped off at any Auckland Council library from 1–21 December.
Donations can also be delivered to the Mission’s HomeGround at 140 Hobson Street from 17–19 December and 22–23 December or made online via the Auckland’s Angels website.
What to donate
Alcohol-free, non-perishable food items are most needed, including tinned vegetables and fruit, pasta, rice, cereal, spreads, flour, sugar and Christmas treats such as biscuits and chocolate. Non-food essentials such as baby food, nappies, toiletries and hygiene products are also welcomed.
The Mission also accepts new, unwrapped gifts for infants, children and teenagers, such as puzzles, dolls, Lego, craft kits, sports balls, books, board games, or Prezzy cards. Clothing is not requested due to sizing challenges.
