A man has turned himself in after a stabbing in Henderson’s town centre that left another man seriously injured on Wednesday afternoon.
Police were called to Edsel Street at 2.40pm, where the victim was found with serious injuries. The street sits opposite WestCity Waitakere mall.
Inspector Simon Walker, Waitematā West Area Commander, said on Wednesday that police believed the victim and offender were known to each other.
“I’d like to reassure the Henderson community that it’s believed the offender and victim are both known to each other. There is no cause for any ongoing concern,” he said.
Walker said police would maintain high visibility in the Henderson CBD, including regular patrols by the Henderson Beat Team.
By Wednesday evening, police had located their person of interest, after he walked into the front counter of Henderson Police Station.
Detective Senior Sergeant Megan Goldie, of Waitematā CIB, said the man was taken into custody shortly after presenting himself.
“Police have charged the 45-year-old man with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm,” she said. “I acknowledge our frontline and CIB staff who responded to this incident and worked to apprehend the offender as quickly as possible.”
The man will appear in the Waitākere District Court today.
The victim remains in a serious but stable condition at Auckland City Hospital.
