The release of Auckland’s final local election results has been pushed back by a day due to an unprecedented number of special votes.
Auckland Council’s elections team confirmed today that more than 10,000 special votes were received, requiring additional time for validation by the Electoral Commission.
Final results will now be announced after 10am on Saturday, October 18, instead of Friday, October 17.
“The delay is due to the additional time required to validate this extraordinary number of special votes,” the elections team said in an email to candidates.
Second term Franklin Local Board member Andrew Kay told the Franklin Times, “we are not expecting much change to the local vote counts.”
“Looking at last term’s trend there was only a change of about 200 votes.”
Kay represents Team Franklin, which so far, has taken all but one of the seats for the Franklin Local Board.
“Team Franklin and the local board are ready to hit the ground running and we are looking forward to advancing the work programme that is in the pipeline which will see delivery for Pukekohe and Franklin,” Kay says.
Results will be published on voteauckland.co.nz. Candidates will only be contacted directly if the final count changes their election outcome.
