Beachlands Memorial Hall

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Plans are picking up pace to transform Beachlands Memorial Hall and integrate the community library into a vibrant, multi-purpose community hub for everyone.

More than just a hall for hire, the refreshed space will support connection, creativity and
everyday use – featuring flexible areas to work, meet, create and recreate. The hub will also offer access to the council’s library collection and services.

The original hall was built in 1922 and had a grocery store located in the front. After a fire in 1953, the hall was rebuilt by community volunteers, and eventually the name was changed from Beachlands Hall to Beachlands Memorial Hall as a tribute to those who helped rebuild it. The hall is now a multi-purpose open space facility suitable for any kind of event or conference for up to 200 guests.

The focus is to make the most of existing spaces and expand on how they can be used more effectively to serve Beachlands’ growing community.

A dedicated community programme specialist is now onboard to work with current venue hirers and other stakeholders to shape a programme that reflects local priorities and help with transitioning.

Franklin Local Board chair Alan Coles says the aim is to create a welcoming, inclusive hub with a real community feel.

“Our local board Wairoa representative, Alix Bonnington — a Beachlands local — has been
working with council staff to engage groups including the Pohutukawa Youth Council,
Beachlands Network and local library volunteers.

“Local young people have shared their ideas, and we’re exploring how to support everything from study and socialising to community connection.”

Plans include a study area with charging, seating, games, bike racks, table tennis, and even a 3D printer.

Beachlands Memorial Hall will remain available for hire until June 30, with current hirers to be contacted as plans progress.
